Gaming - concepts, technology and culture - is going to be one of the main drivers of change in how we do things in the post pandemic world, This weekās release by Unreal Engine of the ā MetaHumanā creator, democratises the creation of high fidelity, close-to-human characters - which, in a few short iterations, might become indistinguisable from the real thing. Relevant for brainfood across any number of intersections - candidate experience, engagement, employer branding. The future, as ever, is not going to wait for us to get comfortable with it. Have a read and make sure you watch the demo. H/T to brainfooder Bas van de Haterd for the share in the fb group. EMPLOYER BRANDING

Hiring at GitLab
I stated in my review of remote, that Gitlab was crossover star of the 2020, blazing the way forward with its open source, remote only culture. Gitlab resources on remote working became the go-to for the rest of us, who suddenly had to transition to the new way of working. They continue to lead here by publishing their internal handbook that the current recruiting team at Gitlab uses to hire. Obviously must read folks. H/T to brainfooder Tris Revill for the share REMOTE WORKING

All Stories Are Wrong, but Some Are Useful
Extraordinary post unpacking the power of story telling - why we need stories, how we emotionally commit to narratives with explanatory power, how we can struggle to change in spite of evidence to the contrary. Relevant to society at large and for our own internal reflections. On the practical side, useful techniques to use for employer branding, international communications and candidate engagement. Must read folks. ENGAGEMENT

Interviewing & Pattern Matching
Pattern matching at interview is basically like keyword matching on CV/ resume screen - a derided yet common practice in recruiting. This hiring manager accepts this claim, yet makes a reasonable defence of the practice. Got to be honestā¦.I found myself thinkingā¦ā¦the guy has a pointā¦. ASSESSMENT

'Rent-A-Person Who Does Nothing' in Tokyo Receives Endless Requests, Gratitude
Is Japan really quite strange, or this is just a Western fetish for exotica? Maybe a bit of both, but the stories of strangeness from Japan keep coming. Shoji Morimoto advertises himself as a person who can āeat and drink, and give simple feedback, but do nothing moreā - and heās inundated with work. Persistent zero economic growth, collapsing birthrate, Hikikomori ā¦.Japanās weirdness may merely be a jarring glimpse of a future we might all one day share. Itās the Lunar New Year so ę禧ē¼č²” and ę°å¹“åæ«ęØ! Itās also Valentines Day so I hope it is not inappropriate for me to send you all some extra ā¤ļø today. Cool stuff happening off world. This year will see not one, not two but three Earther missions to Mars. Last Monday, the UAE successfully deployed a Mars orbiter, becoming the first Arab and Muslim majority nation to achieve the feat. This was followed up two days later the Tianwen-1, the Chinese orbiter and lander, which will also attempt to deploy a rover to the surface of the Red planet later this spring. NASA coming up in a few short months - particularly exciting as the plan is to deploy a helicopter to Mars - the first aerial reconnaissance of another planet by the human race. This sort of stuff, well, it can only give us Amal. Have a great week everybody.Ā Hung
