How Management by Metrics Leads Us Astray
âWhen a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measureâ Do you make data driven hiring decisions? We should try to (I think) but we always need to remember what data is - flawed measurements of some activities and events, not all activities and events. This excellent post is about running a business based on metrics and perils of âdoing what you measureâ. Relevant whenever we think about recruiting KPIâsâŠ..have a read. RECRUITMENT OPERATIONS

How to Find People on Clubhouse
There isnât a successful community out there that doesnât become a sourcing site for recruiters who know their way around how the Internet. Great breakdown here from brainfooder Jan Tegze on sourcing on Clubhouse. Obviously donât be a d1ck about it. H/T to brainfooder Tris Revill for the share SOURCING

The Biden Administration Puts Recruitment Easter Egg On White House Website
Nothing new in sneaking in recruitment ads in the source code but this idea was clever timing which foresaw that traffic to whitehouse.gov was going to spike following the inauguration of Joe Biden as President of the United States. Well done the recruiter who suggested putting it in there, love to know who that might be. A brainfooder? I hope so. H/T brainfooder Bas van de Haterd for the share in the fb group

How to Stop Endless Discussions
Quick answer? Create a RFC - Request For Comments document where both the proposition and the comments are publicly shared. We get emotionally invested in our ideas and become motivated reasoners seeking to âwinâ the argument without really understanding why that is important. The RFC forces you to justify your point, in writing and publicly. We really should do this more - have a read. CULTURE

FirstLook
The talent directory became a thing last year, when tech companies took the time to build a tool to help increase the visibility of team members they had to let go. It was something both sad and cool. One more to add to the list - FirstLook from Booking.com. Have a look here if youâre hiring. Dominic Rohde for the share in the fb group

The Europeans Rethinking The Gig Economy Model
Can Europeans come up with an alternative to the gig economyâs âgrowth at all costâ model?
The post gets more interesting at the halfway point when it looks at cooperatives like CoopCycle. We really need to recognise the diversity of possible relationships between individual and organisation - and move away from the over simplistic binary of âexploited gig workerâ vs âprivileged employee. H/T brainfooder Tris Revill for the share in the fb group

Texans Chaos: Why Jack Easterby Is Still There & Deshaun Watson Wants Out
Superb long read about organisational dysfunction, accelerated by broken promises, unequal treatment, a lack of transparency on process, a lack of definition on role and - perhaps - the role of prayer in candidate selection. Itâs the story of the Houston Texans, who stand to end their catastrophic 2020 season by losing their star quarterback - and probably a great deal of the fan base. CULTURE

Diversity Recruiting Efforts Wonât Significantly Improve Until We Address These 2 Barriers
We talked about the tyranny of metrics in the first post in this newsletter, so perhaps fitting that we end on the same note, this time on how classic recruiting KPIâs like TTH can adversely impact efforts to diversify the workforce. Optimising for one thing, is going to mean debilitating another. Great writing by John Vlastelica. H/T to brainfooder Jacob Sten Madsen for the share in the fb group

Recruiting Brainfood and Beyond!
Marcus Edwardes may have the most melodious voice Iâve heard on a recruiting podcast. I mean - just listen to the manâs dulcet tones here. Delighted to join him for this pod, which is mainly focused on Recruiting Brainfood so if you want to know more about how this thing has become what it is, have a listen here.

Simon Sinek on Developing an Infinite Mindset
Brené Brown and Simon Sinek are two of the most admired people in the brainfood community. I confess I know little about either one, so this podcast interview was a two birds, one stone experience for me. Have a listen here. H/T to brainfooder Sukanya Patel for the share PODCAST

SoâŠ..what do you all think of Clubhouse? On the one hand I think itâs a fantastic opportunity to have some great conversations with people youâve never met; on the other, it can be noisy, cliquey and unwelcoming. I suspect this duality is characteristic of any new social setting where norms are only just being established. I think there is something we can do, and I might do some brainfood on there. Follow my account there if youâre on it - and if you want an invite, let me know seems I have a few⊠Anyway, Iâm still in London obviously, mainly watching Economics Explained videos on Youtube because who doesnât need simplified content on economics. DM me on twitter or Instagram if you got any other channel you want me to check out. Have a great week everybody. Hung
