The Unbearable Weightlessness of Being (In Lockdown)
As we begin to emerge from lockdown, big questions are being asked on what the standard operating model of business should be: remote, hybrid or co-located? An interesting angle from this post which argues for the existence of an essential ‘gravity’ to a businesses which is missing when you don’t have a physical HQ. What do we think - do companies have a soul and - if so - must it be at a physical place? Even as a remote only advocate, I’m kind of thinking…..maybe it does. Fascinating conjecture: have a read here

The Three Sides of Risk
Some stories are so well told that you don’t mind if they take the long route to get to the point. A tragic, personal story to illustrate what must have been a remarkable presentation. It’s about the nature of risk and, if you only read one thing in brainfood this week, read this. ECONOMY

Investigate TikTok Like A Pro!
Does anyone know how to source from TikTok? The only social media rocketship that is still flying north east, TikTok continues its extraordinary rise and it’s about time we recruiters knew how to make it work for us. This post from Bellingcat is as comprehensive a guide as you’ll find. H/T brainfooder Yulia Bondar for the share in the fb group

Spain Takes 'Giant Step' On Guaranteed Minimum Income
There is no guaranteed outcome for the policy of guaranteed minimum income but it feels like past time to give it a shot. Now looking like Spain could be first out of gate with something close to universal, unconditional income. Particularly important, as any economic ‘recovery’ is unlikely to be measured in gainful and dignified employment, as brainfooder Kevin Wheeler succinctly observed in the fb group earlier this week. The Corporate Culture Gap
Some acronyms to learn: CAI (Culture As Imagined) vs CAP (Culture As Practiced), and the distance between the two being CCG (Corporate Culture Gap). Beginnings of a framework here in this thought provoking post on employers walking the talk. H/T brainfooders Pedro Oliveira & Catia Sousa for the share CULTURE

Mythical Man Month: Why More Manpower Doesn’t Mean Faster Work
Is hiring more people always the answer? Of course, we know it isn’t, but perhaps have never seen the reason why so well described as in this superb 5 minute lesson to the wise. Not sure what category this should go under, other than ‘must watch’ RECRUITMENT OPERATIONS

Coronavirus Contact Tracing: My New Skill
Fascinating report on a job that thousands of people are now going to do doing. Journalist Rory Cellan-Jones gives it contact tracing a go and his findings are eye opening. Lot of transferrable skills from sourcing / recruiting here to the Covid economy it seems. H/T brainfooder Petar Vujosevic for the share. FUTURE OF WORK

Companies Must Pay Share of Rent for Employees Working from Home
Important ruling (Swiss brainfooders pls update where you are with this) from Switzerland’s top court: employers are required to contribute to employees’ rent if they work from home. Being a little stunned by unexpected second order effects of Covid-19 will be only thing that is predictable these days. Fascinating changes in the relationship between individual, company and the state. Have a read here

It’s my birthday this Tuesday, so normally I would use this moment to ask you to take part in the Brainfood Forest and join me in planting some trees for the planet. However, it’s been a weird year for everybody and I think this is moment that is going to have to be revisited later in the year. Expect an email from me at some point late in 2020 asking you for $10 or your local currency equivalent. In the meantime, I got to bake a cake. Anyone got any recipes? I have no idea what I’m doing. Have a great week everybody. Hung
